The Union of Hungarian Student Organizations in Romania (briefly UHSOR in the following) represents and protects the rights of the Hungarian students from the main campuses in Romania. The union has member organizations in every campus, which organize its main programs, but it has some actions at national level for thousands of students from all over the country and other neighbouring countries. The Union was founded right after the revolution in 1990 by the Hungarian students of the major campuses like Cluj Napoca, Tîrgu Mureş, Braşov, Iaşi, Oradea. Shortly after that a next member who joined the union was the Hungarian Students Organization of Timişoara from Timişoara and the Union of the Hungarian Students of Bucharest also joined the union. In 2002 the Union of the Hungarian Students of Satu Mare also joined the union. The highest executive commitee is the Students Board which is made up by the leaders of the local member organizations or their representatives and this is the forum where the motions and decisions are made. The board has a meeting in every month and between the two meetings the president’s board takes the decisions. This bord is made up by: the president, the managing vicepresident, the vicepresident for forreign affairs. The president is elected by the Students Board. The educational questions are discussed and resolved by the Educational Council made up by the representatives for educational affairs for each organization apart and leaded by the vicepresident for educational affairs. The number of the students with hungarian nationality learning in the institutions of higher education in Romania is increasing. Comparing to the procentage of the hungarian minority in Romania (which is ~7%) the procentage of these student in the higher education is smaller (under 7%).
The union is involved in many educational programs hosted mainly by the Hungarian educational system but not only. It has delegates in many foundations with the same educational purpose. It is member of the Hungarian Youth Conference and Council. The member organizations of the union are organizing mainly educational, cultural and spare time programs. These organizations are organizing in every year the professional student conferences in technical, medical, social science and science fields of study. It has other educational programs, which give the possibility for the students to get scholarships or professional refresh courses. The main aims of the organization are the building and strengthening of the Hungarian student communities by the diverse and colorful programs. The sections and clubs of the member organizations also offer diverse local and national or even international programs including sports, arts, newspaper. The above-mentioned programs involve about 65-70% of the 17.000-18000 Hungarian students in Romania. We have good relations with other student organizations in Romania like the AISEEC, BEST, AEGEE or from other countries (Slovakia, Yugoslavia, Ukraine) and with the National Union of Students in Hungary, which is already member of the ESIB.
